Twelve packages. Pick one, do it, come back for another. Each is a whole day that stands on its own, and each names every line, every direction to read on the platform, every stop count and every fare. No taxis anywhere in it — because the network genuinely goes to all of this, and because you should never have to negotiate a fare in a language you don't speak.
Nothing on this page depends on anything else on this page. Open a package, and it tells you where to stand, which word to read on the platform, how many stops, what it costs and what you will see. Do package 7 on your first morning and package 2 three years later; neither cares.
Every package starts from Sirkeci, because that is a rail node almost anything in the city can reach: Marmaray underneath, the T1 tram on the street, the T6 in the old terminal building, and Eminönü's ferry piers ten minutes' walk downhill. If you are staying somewhere else, get to Sirkeci, Eminönü, Yenikapı, Kabataş, Üsküdar or Kadıköy first — those six hubs are where every package actually begins.
Each one opens with its spine — the two or three lines that carry the whole day — and a strip telling you the length, what the fares come to, what tickets you'll buy and which day of the week it cannot be done. Then the day itself, stop by stop. Coloured strips are movements: a badge for the line, the terminus to read on the platform, the stop count, the minutes.
Times are a suggested shape, not a schedule. Shift the whole thing an hour later if you like — the only things genuinely pinned are opening hours, closed days, sunset, and a handful of ferries that sail three times a day.
Istanbul's network is genuinely excellent and genuinely badly signposted in English. Everything below is what you need for all twelve packages. Learn the first three things before you land and the rest will look after itself.

This page is built on a simple premise: if you don't speak Turkish, a metered taxi is the one part of Istanbul where you are negotiating blind, and the network goes almost everywhere a taxi would take you. Across twelve full days there is not a single taxi leg. Three moments genuinely tempt you into one. Here is what to do at each.
From Sabiha Gökçen, M4's first train is 06:00 and Marmaray's is 06:03. M4's all-night service runs Friday and Saturday nights only. From Istanbul Airport, M11's first trains are similarly early-morning. So an arrival between about 01:00 and 05:00 has three honest choices:
Note there is no İETT night bus at all to Eminönü, Sirkeci or anywhere on the European old city. The thirteen night lines terminate at Taksim, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, Üsküdar or Pendik. This is the single genuine hole in the network, and it is the reason a very late arrival simply costs you sleep.
Zeyrek, Süleymaniye, Çamlıca, Nakkaştepe — the places with the views are the places with no station. In every case the answer is the same: walk downhill to water level, where the trams and buses are.
Three of the four malls on this page open directly into a station — Vadistanbul onto the F3 platform, Mall of Istanbul by an enclosed passage from MASKO, Venezia one minute from M7 Karadeniz Mahallesi. Only Viaport Tuzla sits away from its station, and it has a real bus: KM12, which stops at both Tuzla İstasyonu and Tuzla Marina. Package 12 has the directional trap and the last departures.
A pharmacy at 2 a.m., a missed last train, someone unwell. In that case use BiTaksi or Uber, never a street hail. In Istanbul both apps dispatch only licensed taxis, and the reason to use them is not the car — it is that you type the destination and the app fixes the fare, so there is no conversation to have and no meter to argue about. The trip is logged, the driver is identified, and you pay in the app.
If you are hailing one anyway: the meter is flat 24 hours — there is no legal night surcharge, and a driver claiming one is the scam. Tolls for the Avrasya Tüneli and the bridges are legitimate and added on top. Say the denomination of the note aloud as you hand it over, and count the change before you close the door.

The T5 opened in 2021 and most guidebooks still don't mention it. It runs from the Eminönü waterfront — ten minutes' walk from the old city — straight up the Golden Horn through Fener and Balat to the Eyüp cable car. The whole line in order: Eminönü – Küçükpazar – Cibali – Fener – Balat – Ayvansaray – Feshane – Eyüpsultan Teleferik – and on to Alibeyköy. You use four of those stops and walk the rest.
There is no climb in this day except the Kamondo Steps, which you take downhill, and the Eyüp hill, which a cable car does for you on an ordinary fare.

If this is your first day in the city, buy the two Istanbulkarts here and load ₺400–500 each. The walk down to Eminönü passes the Spice Bazaar's back streets — Hasırcılar Cd. and Tahmis Sk. — where the grocers sell the same lokum at roughly a fifth of the covered bazaar's price.

Skip the covered bazaar's stalls; one documented comparison puts the markup inside at 4.5×. Rüstem Paşa is the best İznik tile room on the peninsula and costs nothing.

Honestly: Kiremit Caddesi and the painted stairs are now a café-and-photograph strip, described flatly in current sources as extremely touristy. That is not a reason to skip Balat, it is a reason to walk it properly — shoot the stairs, then go one block off them, where the streets are still residential. An ordinary Istanbulkart fare, not an attraction price. The whole Golden Horn laid out below you with a çay in your hand. You can walk back down through the Eyüp cemetery in 20–25 minutes instead of queueing, and it is a lovely descent. Whether the teleferik charges as a transfer or a fresh boarding is not itemised in the tariff — budget a boarding.

In late September the sun goes down around 18:55 and blue hour runs on to about 19:30. The bridge fishermen are the shot everyone takes; the steps are the one they don't.

Half day? Eminönü → T5 → Fener → walk to Balat → T5 back. Three hours, two fares, and the best of it. Tired? Cut at any T5 stop — the tram runs back to Eminönü and you are never more than 25 minutes from the old city. Raining? This day is all outdoors; swap it for package 2 or 9. Teleferik down? Walk up through the cemetery, or skip Eyüp and give the hour to Balat's side streets.
Everything here sits inside a two-kilometre square. Two tram legs in the whole day, total fares about ₺95 each, and roughly nine kilometres on foot. The transport decision that matters is not which line to take but which gate to walk to.
Foreigners can no longer buy a palace-only ticket. It is one combined Palace + Harem + Hagia Irene admission, ₺2,750 each, card only, no cash at the gate. So the Harem is not a decision any more — go in; it is the least crowded part and holds the best tilework. Skip the €105 Museum Pass; against this list it covers €69 of value and loses you €36.

The gate opens at 09:00 and the coach parties land at 10:30. This is a morning that rewards being early by about two hours of your life.

Çemberlitaş, not Beyazıt. Beyazıt is the main gate and the main crush; Çemberlitaş puts you at the quieter, architecturally better Nuruosmaniye Gate and drops you straight into the jewellery quarter. Walk through and leave at Beyazıt so you cross the bazaar rather than doubling back. The döviz bürosu cluster by the Mahmutpaşa side has the best exchange rates in the city.

Zeyrekhane is open to 22:30 with a Golden Horn terrace. Boza is a winter drink, October to April — Vefa in September is a look at a room, not a glass.

Rain: Topkapı and the Grand Bazaar are both largely covered; drop the sea walls and Zeyrek.
Everything sits on a single coast road. T1 to Kabataş, then the 25E north past everything, starting at İstinye and working back south on foot with short bus hops — İstinye → Emirgan → Rumeli Hisarı → Bebek → Arnavutköy → Ortaköy — arriving at the Ortaköy mosque exactly at golden hour. Nothing is retraced and the light is behind you all afternoon.
The line to remember is 25E, Kabataş ↔ Sarıyer, the only coast bus that runs the whole shore. 40B (Beşiktaş ↔ Sarıyer) does the same road and climbs to İstinye Park. The 22 stops at İstinye, which is fine for everything here. Ignore 40T and 41AT — widely recommended, and neither does what people claim.
Kabataş is the terminus, so you cannot miss it. Sit on the right for the Golden Horn.

About 300 stores — luxury-led, but Zara, H&M, Boyner and a Mavi are here, and some of it is open-air. A free shuttle from Oto Sanayi and İTÜ is listed on an undated page — do not plan around it.

Sirkeci to Üsküdar is one Marmaray stop. Nothing else in this document gives you that ratio, and it is why Üsküdar deserves a whole day rather than the ninety minutes most itineraries give it. The shore half — two Sinan mosques, the Salacak promenade, the Maiden's Tower boat — is entirely on foot from the pier. The hill half needs a bus, and the bus numbers are below.
Üsküdar iskele is a hub in its own right: the M5 metro starts here, and every 12-, 14- and 15-series bus leaves from the stands in front of the ferry pier. Once you are here you can reach the whole Asian hinterland without going back across the water.

Boat times vary seasonally — assume the last outbound is around 17:00 and confirm on the day. There are touts near the approach selling private boats at around ₺300; the official service is about 750 m further along, past the first vendors. Tower hours 09:00–18:00, ticket office closes 17:00.

Next to it, Karacaahmet is one of the largest Ottoman cemeteries in the world, cypress groves and carved headstones, and almost nobody visits it.

Ninety thousand square metres of park with walking trails, a zipline and a panoramic viewing platform — and a view straight down the Bosphorus over Kuzguncuk to both bridges and the European shore. It is the best free panorama on the Asian side and a fraction of Çamlıca's crowd. Walking up from Üsküdar takes 25 minutes and is a real climb; from Bağlarbaşı it is a stroll.

Salacak is the view of Kız Kulesi anyway — the crossing adds the inside of a building, not the picture. Rain: the shore half works wet; the hill loop does not. Do not cram Çamlıca in: it is genuinely a separate half-day, needs the 15C, and the wrong direction from everything else here.
Three villages sit in a row on the Asian shore north of Üsküdar — Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi, Çengelköy — and one bus route threads all of them. You go out by bus, working north, and come home across the Bosphorus by boat, landing at Kabataş at golden hour with the tram waiting.
The bus is easy: stand at Üsküdar iskele and take any bus numbered 15-anything. There are seventeen of them — 15, 15B, 15C, 15E, 15H, 15K, 15M, 15N, 15P, 15R, 15S, 15T, 15U, 15Y and more — every one terminates at Üsküdar and every one runs this shore road as far as Çengelköy before turning inland. Ask for "Çengelköy" and sit on the left.
The line is Çengelköy – Kuzguncuk – Beşiktaş – Kabataş, and it has three catches:
This package therefore uses the ferry from Çengelköy, all the way across to Kabataş, which is the frequent version and needs no luck. The 18:00 sailing puts you on the water at sunset. If it is a Sunday, or the lodos wind has cancelled everything, take the 15 back to Üsküdar and the Marmaray home — you lose the crossing and nothing else.

The least touristed Bosphorus village left on the Asian side, and the reason to give it the longest slot of the day. One street — İcadiye — carries the Üryanizade Camii with its wooden minaret, the Surp Krikor Lusavoriç Armenian church, two Greek Orthodox churches, and the Beth Yaakov and Beth Nissim synagogues, all within a few hundred metres. That coexistence is the neighbourhood's whole identity and it is not a monument or a ticket — it is a street you walk down. The bostan at the top is a historic market garden residents fought off developers to keep. Church and synagogue interiors generally need advance permission — assume you are looking from outside.

The real thing: a working village tea garden under a vast plane tree, running in this form since 1994. Small çay about ₺60, or a thermos for the table at around ₺650 — and you may bring your own pastry, which everyone does. Then the waterfront, the fish restaurants, the small boats. This is the part of the day to not hurry: you have a boat to catch at 18:00 and three hours to fill before it, which is exactly the right amount of time for Çengelköy.
Lunch on the water here, or at İsmet Baba back in Kuzguncuk (Çarşı Cd. 1, since 1951) if you would rather eat earlier. İsmet Baba almost certainly serves alcohol — ask if that matters.

Sunday: the ferry does not sail. Do the same day by bus in both directions and add Nakkaştepe with the time you save.
In February 2024 a commuter line called the T6 opened, running from the historic Sirkeci terminal building — the Orient Express one, at street level, not the Marmaray underneath — out along the Marmara shore. Its stops, in order: Sirkeci – Cankurtaran – Kumkapı – Yenikapı – Cerrahpaşa – Kocamustafapaşa – Yedikule – Kazlıçeşme. Eighteen minutes end to end. Almost no guidebook mentions it, and it puts the whole first half of this day on one train from the old city.
Its one catch is a 25-minute headway. Check the departure board; if the next train is more than ten minutes off, the Marmaray runs to the same places every 8–15 minutes and you walk five minutes at the other end. Both options are written into every leg below.

Everything on it is reachable on the Marmaray via Kazlıçeşme; you lose ten minutes and nothing else.
The Marmaray is the whole day. You ride out to Suadiye, then come back west stop by stop — the avenue, the seafront, the headland, Kadıköy — and cross home by boat at night. Nothing is retraced and each leg is shorter than the one before it.
Suadiye is the station to use for Bağdat Caddesi, not Bostancı or Erenköy: the exit is about 100 m from the avenue, the shortest station-to-street walk anywhere on the line. Right on Yakamoz Sk., left on Ayşeçavuş Cd., and you come out at the Suadiye lights.

The M2 runs from Yenikapı, one Marmaray stop from the old city, straight up through everything modern in Istanbul. Osmanbey alone serves Nişantaşı, Bomontiada and the Feriköy antiques market — they are three different exits from the same platform, which is why this day starts there and why there is no Bomonti station on the M2 however many times you are told otherwise.
Take the Rumeli exit for Nişantaşı and the market; the Pangaltı exit puts you on the wrong side and adds a detour.
Yenikapı's transfer hall is large and well signed — follow M2 and the green colour. This tap starts your two-hour discount window.

What to actually look at: Teşvikiye Camii (1853, Ottoman Baroque, imperial tuğra over the door) has two inscribed nişan taşı — target stones — in its courtyard, marking record rifle shots by Selim III in 1790 and Mahmut II in 1811. Those stones are where the neighbourhood's name comes from, and almost nobody shopping on Abdi İpekçi knows they are there. Then the architecture: Maçka Palas (1922, Giulio Mongeri, now the Park Hyatt) and the early-Republic and Art Nouveau blocks filling the side streets. Abdi İpekçi is the luxury strip; the interesting independent retail is on Atiye, Ahmet Fetgari and Mim Kemal Öke. Skip City's and Lotus — generic upscale malls, and package 9 has five better ones.

Doing it backwards is better if you start late: T1 to Karaköy, F2 up to Tünel, walk İstiklal north to Taksim, M2 to Osmanbey — that way the avenue runs slightly downhill in front of you. Rain: this one is fine wet, and it is the natural swap for packages 1, 3, 5 or 7.
Every mall in this package is a station on the M2, and they come in the order you want them:
Şişli-Mecidiyeköy — Cevahir, direct exit into the mall
Gayrettepe — Zorlu Center, underground passage straight in
Levent — Kanyon and Metrocity, facing each other across the avenue
Sanayi Mahallesi → Seyrantepe → F3 — Vadistanbul, which the funicular opens directly into
No doubling back and no second line. This is the right day for a Sunday, when the Grand Bazaar is shut and the peninsula is at its worst.
North of Sanayi Mahallesi the line divides. Trains signed Hacıosman take the main branch and will sail straight past Seyrantepe. For Vadistanbul you must get off at Sanayi Mahallesi and change, on the same station, onto the Seyrantepe shuttle — which runs every 8½ minutes against the main line's four. Metro İstanbul says this in its own line notes and nobody reads it.
Then the good part: F3, a 750-metre funicular from Seyrantepe, is the only rapid-transit station in Turkey that opens directly into a privately owned building. It delivers you onto the mall's second floor, beside the food court. Walk from station to shop: zero. F3 runs 07:15 to about 23:05, every 10–20 minutes.

It is about 55–70 minutes door to door and it is the nicest of the five to spend an evening in — or take bus 50H from Hacıosman or 50F from 4. Levent if the branch business annoys you; both stop at a stop called Vadistanbul. Rain: do Cevahir, Zorlu, Kanyon and Metrocity, all of which are enclosed, and leave Vadistanbul for a dry evening.
The M1A runs west out of Yenikapı, one Marmaray stop from the old city, through the land walls and out into working Istanbul. Two destinations on it are genuinely worth the ride: Europe's largest coffee shop, a 6,000 m² roastery in a converted cardboard factory at Merter, and a mall built around a one-kilometre canal with gondolas on it at Gaziosmanpaşa. Neither is on any tourist route, both are a short walk from a station, and together they make an unusually good rainy day.
The M1A order matters: from Yenikapı it is Aksaray, Emniyet-Fatih, Topkapı-Ulubatlı (stop 3), then on through Otogar to Merter (stop 10). So you go out to the walls first, cross to the canal mall, and come back to the coffee in the evening — which is when the coffee place is best anyway.
Note the trap that catches everyone: the stop called Topkapı is the land-walls gate, not the palace. Today, for once, that is exactly where you want to be.

Panorama 1453 — Topkapı Kültür Park, daily except Monday 08:30–16:30, card only. A well-made 360° painted panorama of the siege that genuinely works in the room. But foreign admission went ₺700 in March 2025 to ₺990 by January 2026, which is a lot for one large room. First visit: yes. Third: probably not.
Or walk the walls north to Edirnekapı and the Chora — about 2 km beside the Theodosian walls, ending at Kariye Camii, whose mosaics are visible again and which works like a museum outside prayer times. Roughly €20 each. One source claims it is closed to tourist visits all day Friday while others describe only normal prayer pauses — unresolved, so check before making the walk for it.
Or neither, and go straight on. The day stands up without either.

Be clear about what this is. It is Turkey's first Venice-concept centre — a one-kilometre canal with gondolas on it, a San Marco square, painted-sky ceilings — and it is a spectacle first and an outlet second. About 16,000 m² of retail across a claimed 500 units, much of it small independent traders in the "Venezia Çarşı Pazar" bazaar section rather than brand outlets. Real names present include Marks & Spencer, Colin's, Beko, MediaMarkt. If you are hunting discounted designer labels, package 11 is your day and this is not. If you want somewhere genuinely strange to spend an afternoon, and a gondola ride indoors, it is excellent value.
Lunch here — the canal-side restaurants are the reason people actually come.

This is the big one. Espressolab has 360-odd stores; this is the flagship and the only one that carries a size claim. 6,000 m², built inside Turkey's first cardboard factory, opened September 2022 on a ₺50 million investment as the chain's hundredth Turkish store. The founder's line at the opening was that it had become the largest coffee shop in Europe, and nothing I could find disputes it.
Inside: a working roasting plant, the coffee shop itself, a cocktail bar, a bakery, a workshop station, a conference hall, a mini greenhouse, co-working rooms and a large garden. Old factory meets new architecture; people describe it as feeling more like a university campus than a café. Opening hours could not be verified from the company's own site; a widely repeated visitor report says 07:00–05:00, near round-the-clock. Verify before a very late visit. The recurring complaint is long queues at the counter in the evening — arriving at 16:20 is deliberate.

Go in the afternoon, sit in the garden, come back. Half day, canals only? Straight out on the M1A and T4, back the same way; about four hours all in. Rain: this is one of the two best wet-weather days here, along with package 9.
This is the package that most guides get wrong, usually by routing you through M3 and M7 toward Mahmutbey and costing you an hour. The truth is simpler: Marmaray to Ataköy, change once to the M9, and both malls are stops on it. 212 Outlet's station is literally named after it — Halkalı Caddesi / 212 Outlet — and Mall of Istanbul's is MASKO, which connects by an enclosed pedestrian passage so you never cross a road.
You ride past 212 Outlet on the way out and take it on the way back, which puts the better shop second, when you know what you still need.

M9 runs 06:00–00:00 at about nine-minute intervals. At Olimpiyat, the far end, it meets the M11 — worth knowing if you ever need Istanbul Airport from out here.

This is the genuinely large one: 154,000 m² of retail, around 500 stores, opened 2014. IMAX plus fifteen screens, the MOİPark amusement park, a 700-seat theatre, an illusion museum, a hotel. The previous version of this plan told you to pass through in forty minutes; that was written before I understood the scale. If you are doing a mall day at all, this is the one that fills it, and the food court is where lunch happens.

175 stores of genuine factory-outlet stock, including a Nike Factory Store. The better of the two by a distance if you are actually hunting discounts — real outlet pricing rather than fake discounting, and the station exit puts you at the door. This is where the shopping money goes.
ShoppingIf you would rather eat properly on the way back, get off the Marmaray at Bakırköy — it has a real high street and a seafront, and it is two stops closer than home.

Both malls are inside stations, so unlike almost anywhere else in this document you never carry them further than a platform. Late? Watch the M9 — it stops at midnight and has no night service, and it is the only way back to the Marmaray from out here.
Of everything on this page, this is the only destination that is genuinely awkward without a taxi, and it is only fair to say so before you spend three hours of a day on it. The mall sits at the far eastern edge of the city: about 60 minutes of Marmaray to Tuzla, and then a gap between the station and the door that the network covers with one bus route rather than three.
That bus is real and it is verified — KM12, Tuzla Deniz Harp Okulu ↔ Kartal Metro, and it stops at both "Tuzla İstasyonu" and "Tuzla Marina". But its frequency is not published, its last departure is 22:10 on weekdays and 21:00 on Sundays, and the walk you would fall back on is 1.5–1.8 km, roughly 20–25 minutes, along a road whose pavements I could not verify — a local guide pointedly advises covering it by minibus rather than on foot, which is not a good sign.
So: go early, check the return bus before you commit to the last hour, and treat this as a half-day with a long commute rather than a day out. If what you actually want is an outlet mall reachable purely by rail on the Asian side, İstanbul Optimum at M4 Yenisahra does the same job with a station at the door.
Sirkeci, platform signed Gebze
Under the Bosphorus in the first four minutes, then the whole Asian suburban coast. Take something to read. Tuzla, not İçmeler — İçmeler is further from the mall and its own station guide does not even list it as a landmark.

This is the bit to get right. On the KM12's run toward Kartal the Marina comes before the station, so coming from the Marmaray you must board the bus signed Deniz Harp Okulu, not Kartal Metro. Get it wrong and you ride away from the mall. The mall's own stop area is also served by a minibüs line and sits about 470 m from a stop called Marmados Sitesi — a seven-minute walk if the KM12 drops you short.

150+ outlet stores wrapped around a marina, with a theme park and an aquarium attached that you are not doing. The one genuine reason to come: Tuzla is where Istanbul's leather industry actually went when it left Zeytinburnu and Kazlıçeşme in the 1990s — roughly 200 workshops closed there that decade and reopened out here. If a leather jacket is on your list, this is a better place to ask than the Grand Bazaar. Eat at the marina; The Hunger has a branch here.
Shopping · ₺900 lunchFrequency is not published anywhere I could verify — budget 15–30 minutes between buses, and check the İETT live times in Moovit before you settle into the last shop. Last KM12 from Deniz Harp Okulu: 22:10 weekdays, 21:50 Saturdays, 21:00 Sundays. After that, the night lines 130A (Deniz Harp Okulu ↔ Kadıköy, all night) and KM13 (Tuzla ↔ Pendik) are your escape, not a taxi.

Reach it the same way as the airport: Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then M4. About 40 minutes instead of 95, and no bus at all. Palladium at Ataşehir and Buyaka at M5 Ümraniye are the other two Asian-side malls with genuine rail access.
The packages are deliberately unordered, but if you are here for a week and want them sequenced, this is the order I would use — and the reasons are almost entirely about closed days and tired legs.

That leaves 10, 11 and 12 — the coffee, the canals and the outlets — as the ones to swap in when it rains, or when you have shopping to do and no appetite for another mosque. Packages 9, 10 and 11 are all fully indoors.
From Sabiha Gökçen: M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then MARMARAY two stops to Sirkeci. 60–70 minutes, about ₺80 each, immune to traffic. First train 06:00 — an arrival before then means waiting, or the E-10 night bus to Kadıköy. See No taxis.
To Sabiha Gökçen: the same in reverse. M4 runs to midnight, so there is no last-train risk; allow 90 minutes plus your airline's check-in deadline and you have margin to spare.
From Istanbul Airport (IST): MARMARAY all the way to Halkalı, then M11 — the line was completed in June 2026 and now runs Halkalı–IST–Gayrettepe.

Seven of these packages back to back come to roughly ₺1,100 per person in fares — around $23 — plus ₺330 for the two cards. A single taxi from Sabiha Gökçen to the old city is about ₺1,315. That is the entire argument for this page in one line.
If you are running the week in the order above, the envelope that works is: $732 operating — all food, all transport, all tickets, a SIM and incidentals for two people across seven days — plus $700 ring-fenced for shopping and $250 of untouched emergency reserve. That commits $1,682 and leaves $818 of genuine unallocated float, which is the honest answer to "what if we overspend on day three": nothing happens.
The single biggest line is Topkapı at ₺5,500 for two. The worst value on the peninsula is the Basilica Cistern at ₺3,900 for two, which is the first thing to cut. Transport for the whole week is about $50 for two people and is never worth economising on.

Say "Sirkeci", or the name of whichever station you are staying near, to anyone. Every local knows it, and from almost anywhere in this document you are within one change of it. If you are truly stuck, get to any Marmaray station — it runs the full width of the city and the platform signs are only ever Gebze or Halkalı.

Comfortable on main streets: Kadıköy, Moda, Beşiktaş, Nişantaşı, Üsküdar, and the Sirkeci–Sultanahmet strip. Stick to main streets after dark in Tarlabaşı behind İstiklal, Dolapdere, the Aksaray and Laleli backstreets, and Kumkapı once the restaurants empty. None of these are no-go in daylight.
The gap: after the last Marmaray — around 00:22 from Söğütlüçeşme, about 00:30 from most places — no night bus and no rail line reaches Eminönü or Sirkeci until the morning, except on Friday and Saturday nights when Marmaray and the M4 run all night at double fare. The thirteen İETT night lines terminate at Taksim, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, Üsküdar or Pendik. Plan the last leg home before about 00:20 from Monday to Thursday, and nothing in these twelve packages will ever put you near that limit.
Demonstrations: Taksim Square and İstiklal are periodically closed by police at short notice. Leave calmly by a side street and pick the M2 up at Şişhane or Osmanbey.
Late September runs 24–25°C by day and 18–20°C at night, with about six or seven rain days in the month and a sea around 22°C. The variable that catches people is the evening drop on the water: a ferry deck or a waterfront dinner is noticeably colder than the street you left.
Everything below is something I could not confirm to my own satisfaction. It is listed so you can check it rather than discover it, and where sources disagreed I have said so rather than picking one silently. The station names, line numbers and directions in the packages are the part I am confident about; times and prices move.
